Quaesitis Academy [11 Apr 2008|09:20pm]

FACT: Supernatural Beings are not a myth
FACT: They live among us
FACT: Vampires, shapeshifters, witches, elementals, psychics - all of them are here. Now.

The world at large is aware that there is more to life than humanity - they've known this for a long time. Human rights are more 'species rights', vampires walk amongst us, werewolves have PC terminology. Their children are educated with our children - sharing this world in harmony is the key - though we seem, still, to be a way off of that.

For all the world has been aware of the preternatural for hundreds, if not thousands, of years, the world is far from peaceful in this regard (much like in every other regard). It's getting to be a hostile environment in some countries, and the world is collectively holding it's breath as things seem to be in a time of change. Supernatural legislation is being accused of being too harsh, and both shifters and vampires both want their respective species to no longer be considered diseases and be recognized as proper races and peoples. Experimentation on the supernatural has also been going strong and people are moving to have it halted, as much of it is harmful or seems to be. There are large groups of people boycotting a company which has boasted it's tireless search for a 'cure' for everything, stating it could be used as weaponry against them as a people at large. It's motivations are publicly pure, but the implications and morality are being challenged. (note: so far they haven't 'cured' anything.)

In the midst of this lies a school with national independence. Quaesitis Academy.

The Academy is not the only school of its kind - serving, as it does, both preternatural beings and 'normal' humans, but it is considered the top of them all. It's the oldest established, and has a long, detailed history and still remains strong today. It's the only one of it's kind with national autonomy, keeping it's roots deeply in the idea that they are there for the world, not for one part of it. Getting into the school or graduating from it will open doors for a person world wide. It's often thought that if a student comes from there--they can go anywhere and do anything they want. It's the epitome of prestigious. Contrary to it's popularity and the millions they could be making on opening the school up for larger numbers, the school also maintains it's motives towards it's students. The school presumably will eternally remain small, allowing all of it's students a very hands on, interactive learning environment. No one falls through the cracks here, and they mean to keep it that way.

They take a variety of students - from the rich kids that can pay their way, to the children who are court-ordered to attend, taking in the orphans of previous pupils along the way. The mix of students is wide, considering the age range - the last two years of college, plus a three year university course. It attempts to be a world of its own, secluded as it is on a Carribean island, but the world has a way of interfering...

Halcyon Halls [23 Mar 2008|12:30pm]

halcyon_mod
What if they were real?
The myths and legends.
The things that go bump in the night.
What if they were just like you?
Since the dawn of time they've been blamed for all of life's oddities. A strange noise? It must be a ghost. Pets mangled and eaten? Maybe a werewolf got them. That pale man that never ventures out in the day? A vampire, surely. Children behaving badly must be changelings, and that table had to have been forced into your path by a mischievous sprite, now giggling at your misfortune.

The list goes on. For each being, there are hundreds of tales, most pure delusion of course, though much of it based in fact.

From Nessie and Sasquatch to the Bermuda Triangle and the Land of Mu, our world is filled with the unattainable, the unexplainable... that which we call Myth, or Legend.

Yet, like the Will O' the Wisp, or the ghost breath that sends a shiver down your spine, the truth tugs softly at our conscience. Whispers in the dark of a boogeyman in the shadows, or a fairy spinning gossamer tales in the corners of your mind. They are real. And in so many ways... they are just like you. They work. They feed. They even have children. And just like humans, those children go to school.

School however, isn’t always as just classes and homework. Strange old castles often have far more lurking about them than is so readily apparent. Ancient curses have been set loose on the school. Memory loss. Sickness. Power switching... Was it an accident? Or are more sinister plans afoot? Unanswered questions abound as the students and staff first try and understand exactly what has happened to them...

Welcome to Halcyon Halls.
We're changing the future one myth at a time.

Haunted Roads on IJ [07 Mar 2008|09:24am]

"Some places just seem to be that way. You know, mystical hot-spots… The Devils Triangle; Sedona, Arizona; New Orleans; Stonehenge; places where strange things just seem to happen. I never used to think much about any of that, I thought it all was all bunk, the work of fiction or an over active imagination (Maybe too much pizza before bedtime.). I never believed any of it before I moved to Seattle. Never thought any of it could be true until I bought a renovated condo in the Old Town Towers. But not even the things I saw there could prepare me for what happened underground. Now, I know things like ghosts and werewolves and such can’t exist. But what about that housekeeping woman that walks through walls, and one time walked right through me? Or that creepy pale guy in D5 who always smells like blood (or the woman beside him that always smells like garlic)? Strange howling sounds, terrified screams, disappearing pets..."

Welcome to Marquette. Small town in the middle of nowhere, Michigan. Up on Lake Superior it's the largest town in the entire upper peninsula--and yet it's still got only around 20,000 people.

Nice place. Too bad it's sitting on a spiritual beacon that draws in the supernatural, both good and evil.

the Story. the Navigation.
The snow continues to fall over a small town located in the middle of nowhere. Although there was little to do in Juneau, an amusement park was built to rid the people of their boredom. Complete with a ferris wheel, go-karts, and a carousel, J.R. Park was the new center of attention. Soon a theater, strip mall, and a few more restaurants and bars were built. These were add-ons to the hospital, schools, and small businesses and homes that consisted of Juneau. It seemed like the town was growing.

Days and nights were normal in the sense that the sun rose in the morning, and set in the evening, leaving the moon to do its job for the night until the sun started its duty all over again the next day. But on October 5th of every year, the sun sets, and does not return for a full 30 days. Thirty days of night seems like it would drive one to madness, but the people of Juneau are quite used to it. Outsiders and visitors, however found it stressful and even scary. Residents were always prepared and for the most part felt safe when the time came to say goodbye to the sun. The year 1981, was different.

On the afternoon of October 14th, children and adults alike were out and about; on the ferris wheel, riding the go-karts, drinking at the bars and dining out in the restaurants. One by one, people began to disappear. Who or what ever it was causing these sudden disappearances soon decided that picking the residents off one by one was going by too slowly. Soon enough, every remaining person in Juneau was slaughtered. Throats torn, limbs gone, and blood staining the snow; the town, was dead. The cause? No one knows. The bodies were swept under the rug by authorities, not wanting to admit that there was no explanation for what had happened. So the town was closed.

Years later, new buildings and homes were added to the community, so that Juneau could have a fresh start in life. However, the closed off part of the town remained so, leaving it abandoned. Today, during the night, things are heard from within the gates of the Ghost Town. During the 30 days of night, sightings have been reported of figures in the dark.

In the beginning, there was darkness. But the darkness wasn't empty. The earth as we know it wasn't ruled by humanity, it was ruled by the beings that had been here first.

They'd like it back now.

The modern world is ruled by humanity – humanity has spread across the globe, an overwhelming presence on every continent and in every corner of the globe. Yet this was not always the case.

For millennia other species’ ruled in dominance, some we know of, others we don’t. There are thousands, if not millions of years that are unaccounted for by people of science, far too much history on this planet to ever be properly documented.

What is known, though, is that the earth moves in cycles – as one dominant type rises, so another falls into abeyance. And this is what happened to the ‘others’ – the angels, the demons, the fae... Their day of dominance is past, long gone. And yet they have clung to existence, refusing to pass into extinction, instead doing what they must to survive.

And survive they have, albeit in a lesser form, finding new homes in the uninhabited, remoter corners of the world. And for millennia, they so existed, until the rise of humanity. For humans spread the way that no other species ever has done. And, as humanity rose and multiplied, it became apparent that this seemingly helpless species was anything but – rather humanity emerged as aggressive, territorial and extremely intolerant of difference – even within its own species. They did not live in harmony with their surroundings, or remain within their own territory. Instead they changed the environment to suit their needs and expanded continuously. Anything which threatened their mastery of the environment was ruthlessly hunted down. Any members of their own species who were different were either likewise hunted down, or made outcasts, if their abilities became apparent to their communities. And so it was that those species who had lived on for millennia since the downfall of their kind, living apart from the rest of the world, found it increasingly difficult to do so.

Some species’ adapted, integrating with humanity to a greater or lesser degree, giving up on a policy of isolation and hiding instead in plain sight. Others continued to hide, moving to increasingly remote areas where they could continue to live in uninterrupted solitude...
